Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows the literate slave and preacher Nat Turner, played by Nate Parker, whose financially strained owner accepts an offer to use Turner’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities, against himself and his fellow slaves, Turner orchestrates an uprising in hopes of leading his people to freedom.
